A Odontologia contemporânea enfrenta desafios recorrentes no controle da dor, na modulação da resposta inflamatória e na regeneração dos tecidos orais, especialmente em casos de dor orofacial, afecções periodontais e disfunções das articulações temporomandibulares. Nesse cenário, a Cannabis sativa L. se destaca como uma planta medicinal aliada no tratamento de diversas manifestações orofaciais. Originária da Ásia Central, a C. sativa L. pertence a família Cannabaceae, e tem sido utilizada para múltiplos fins, desde a produção de fibras até aplicações medicinais. No Brasil, foi recentemente inserida na lista de Denominações Comuns Brasileira (DCB), legitimando seu uso terapêutico. Somente nas últimas décadas, o mecanismo de ação e os seus compostos químicos foram compreendidos. Dentre os mais conhecidos fitocanabinóides, estão o canabidiol (CBD) e o tetrahidrocanabinol (THC). Estudos revelaram que essas substâncias interagem com o sistema endocanabinóide (SEC), que regula funções essenciais no organismo, recepcionando estes compostos químicos com propriedades farmacológicas promissoras, inclusive na cavidade oral. Receptores endocanabinóides foram identificados na mucosa oral, polpa dentária, periodonto, glândulas salivares e articulações temporomandibulares, abrindo novas perspectivas para abordagens mais eficazes na Odontologia. A ativação do SEC pode proporcionar analgesia, controle de inflamação e efeitos antimicrobianos, contribuindo para melhores resultados clínicos dos pacientes em tratamentos odontológicos.
